Earth Science Learning Modules - Quarter 1

Earth Science is one of the core subjects offered in the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum under the K to 12 Basic Education Program in the Philippines, particularly for students in the Academic Track – General Academic Strand (GAS) and the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Strand. This subject provides students with a foundational understanding of the Earth's structure, processes, history, and its place in the universe.

The course is designed to develop learners’ scientific literacy and critical thinking by exploring various aspects of the Earth system—geosphere (land), hydrosphere (water), atmosphere (air), and biosphere (life). Topics typically include the origin and structure of the Earth, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, geologic time, natural hazards, and the Earth’s resources. Students also explore the solar system and the universe to better understand Earth's uniqueness and role in the cosmos.

Earth Science emphasizes the importance of environmental stewardship and disaster preparedness, especially given the Philippines' vulnerability to natural hazards such as typhoons, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. Through hands-on activities, laboratory work, and research, students gain practical insights into how natural processes affect daily life and how science can offer solutions.

By the end of the course, learners are expected to demonstrate an appreciation of the Earth as a dynamic system, recognize the value of sustainable development, and make informed decisions that support environmental responsibility and resilience. Earth Science equips SHS students with knowledge and skills relevant to both higher education and real-world problem-solving.
