About the Subject

Reading and Writing Skills is a core subject in the Senior High School (SHS) curriculum in the Philippines. It is designed to equip students with the necessary skills and strategies to comprehend and analyze various types of written texts and effectively communicate their ideas in written form. The subject is an essential component of the SHS program as it aims to develop the students' critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills, which are necessary for academic and career success.

The Reading and Writing Skills subject covers a broad range of topics, including literary and non-literary texts, academic research, technical writing, and creative writing. Through a variety of reading materials, students will learn to identify and analyze the different elements of a text, such as the author's purpose, tone, and style. They will also learn to recognize literary devices and figurative language used in the texts, such as symbolism, imagery, and metaphor.

In writing, the subject focuses on developing the students' skills in expressing their ideas and opinions clearly and effectively. Students will learn various types of writing, such as expository, persuasive, and creative writing. They will also learn to structure their ideas logically, use appropriate language and tone, and effectively use grammar and punctuation.

The Reading and Writing Skills subject in SHS also aims to develop the students' research skills, which are essential for academic writing and inquiry-based learning. Students will learn to conduct research, gather relevant information, and synthesize their findings into written reports or essays.

In the first quarter, the subject focuses on developing the students' reading and comprehension skills. The topics covered include identifying and analyzing the elements of literature, such as plot, character, and setting. The students also learn how to identify literary devices, such as metaphor, simile, and personification, and analyze their effects on the text's meaning. Additionally, students learn how to compare and contrast literary texts and analyze their themes and messages. They also study different types of non-literary texts, such as news articles, opinion pieces, and speeches, and learn how to evaluate the credibility of sources.
